Burl woods have very interesting "wild" structures. The grain is caused by a growth anomaly with greatly altered wood structures. It is caused by frequent preventive knots, so-called "sleeping eyes", which are always interrupted during growth and "overgrown". This results in bump- or tuberous growths in the root (root burl) or in the trunk area (burl trunks). Since this special growth form is very rare, burl wood is very valuable.
